Refractive Lens Exchange

Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is a surgical option for some patients where the natural lens of the eye is replaced with an artificial lens known as an intraocular lens (IOL). The RLE procedure is similar to cataract surgery.

Benefits of RLE

Since the cornea is relatively untouched, RLE may be a better option than LASIK for patients with thin corneas, large pupils, dry eyes, or other minor cornea problems. Benefits of refractive lens exchange include the elimination of the need for future cataract surgery and rapid recovery.

RLE may be used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia or the need for reading glasses because of exciting new advancements.

These advancements include astigmatism correcting IOLs, presbyopic IOLs, and laser technology. Your surgeon will discuss all your options to find the solution that is best for your individual needs.
