Dr. Kent completed his fellowship in glaucoma and cataracts at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center after finishing his ophthalmology residency at Stanford Medical Center. He specializes in cataract surgery and all types of glaucoma surgery, including complex cases.

He is a board-certified ophthalmic surgeon who cares for patients at the downtown Charleston, Goose Creek, and Walterboro clinics, and performs surgery at Roper Eye Surgery Center and Trident Surgery Center.
Former Director of the Glaucoma Service at MUSC
Dr. Kent served for many years as director of the glaucoma service at MUSC as an Associate Professor, where he was also Director of the Residency Program. He continues to teach glaucoma fellows today.
Award-Winning Educator and Published Glaucoma Researcher
He was the first faculty member to receive the Pierre Gaultier Jenkins Teaching Award twice, and has published numerous peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on glaucoma and cataracts. As Principal Investigator of many clinical trials, he has presented his work at national and international glaucoma meetings.
Dr. Kent’s clinical focus is on helping patients understand their eye disease, their options, and how to harness technology and techniques to maximize their vision as well as the quality of life. He truly enjoys the long-term relationships he has built with patients over the years, taking care of both routine and complex eye conditions.
Dr. Kent graduated from Haverford College with a B.S. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. He received his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine (CA), followed by a “flex” transitional internship at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Dr. Kent returned to Stanford Medical Center for his ophthalmology residency. He subsequently did a fellowship in glaucoma and cataracts at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (NH).
Dr. Kent then joined the faculty at MUSC as director of the glaucoma service for many years (Associate Professor), during which he was Director of the Residency Program and was the first faculty member to be awarded the Pierre Gaultier Jenkins Teaching Award twice. Committed to teaching and research, he collaborated in extensive research with residents, and continues to teach glaucoma fellows. He has published numerous articles, peer-reviewed papers, and book chapters on glaucoma, cataracts, and other subjects within ophthalmology. Dr. Kent has been the Principal Investigator of many clinical trials and has presented his work at national and international glaucoma meetings. He is a member of the American Glaucoma Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and has been recognized by “Best Doctors in America.”
